Civil Engineering Works

Half-Way-Tree Transportation Centre
Potable Water Supply System

This project entails the excavation of 2′ – 0” wide x4′ – 0′ deep trench for 3”, 2” 1.25” or 1” diameter water pipe and a electrical duct bank consisting of 6”, 5” 4” & 2” diameter electrical conduits. The water pipes were fused using a Fusion Machine provided by the client. After the water pipes and conduits were installed they were encased in concrete, if the duct bank carried a high voltage electrical line. Alternatively they were in sand surround. The remainder of the trench was backfilled with selected excavated material. The total length of the water pipeline was 2974 and the total length of the conduits 16058 metres. The job was completed in three (3) months.

St. Jago - Mt. Oliphant Loading Station Raw Water Supply System

St. Jago – Mt. Oliphant Loading Station Raw Water Supply System was our first major project. The project involved the excavation of 2′ – 0” wide x4′ – 0′ deep trench for installation of 6” diameter water pipe and 5” & 2” diameter electrical conduits. The water pipes were fused using a Fusion Machine provided by the client. After the water pipes and conduits were installed they were encasted in concrete with the remainder of the trench backfilled with sand and selected excavated material. The total length of the pipeline was 5471 metres beginning at St. Jago in Clarendon and finish at Mount Oliphant in Manchester. The job was completed in twelve (12) months.

Excavation of trench 2’-0” wide × 4’-0” deep by a Trencor 1060 trenching machine to facilitate the installation of 3”, 2”, 1 1/4” & 1” HDPE water pipe and 6”, 5”, 4” & 2” PVC electrical conduits.
The water pipes were fused using Fusion Machines provided by the client.
After pipes and conduit were installed they were encased in concrete with the remainder of the trench backfilled with selected excavated material.
The total length of the pipeline was 11, 000 metres the various size water pipes and conduits basically constructed as a ring main around the Mt. Oliphant complex.
The HDPE & PVC pipes and all associated fittings and valves were supplied by the Main Contractor.

Seagrape Revetment Works
Seagrape Revetment Works at Half Moon, Rose Hall, Montego Bay

Surdeen Equipment & Trucking Co. Ltd. have been employed to Demolish (damaged) existing concrete retaining wall and cart away debris; excavate formation to create foundation for revetment; supply and install Geo-textile/Geo-grid composite; supply and install revetment comprising Toe boulder and armour stone and construct terrace concrete slab and knee wall.

U.W.I. Undergraduate Housing Construction
U.W.I. Undergraduate Housing Construction of Temporary Animal House & Demolition Works

The project entails the demolition of existing structures on the proposed site for the construction of 400 studio units for graduate student accommodation.
Some four (4) structures were demolished and the debris arising from the demolition was carted to the municipal dump.
Another aspect of the project was the construction of an 800 sq. ft. building to house the animals used by the University for experimental purposes and which occupied the location of the new units.
The construction is of conventional block and steel with timber roof and concrete floor slab.

Water,  Sewerage and Drainage Project
Port Antonio Water, Sewerage and Drainage Project

Water pipe installation 1, 285m long on King Street, Queen Street, Fort George Street, Titchfield Street, Musgrave Street and Valentine Street
Work involves excavation of trenches, placing of bedding material, installation of HDPE water pipes, backfilling of trenches and reinstatement of roadway.
The water lines will be tested and sterilized prior to making connection to existing customer.

River Training Works
River Training Works, Nine Miles, Bull Bay, St. Andrew

The works involved the excavation of river shingle from the Cane River Bed beginning where the river discharges in the Caribbean sea to a distance of approximately one mile upstream.
The material excavated was loaded and transported by trucks to the Kingston transshipment Port to be used as fill material. A total of 90, 000 cubic yards was excavated and transported to the transshipment port over a two (2) month period.

Emergency Shower & Eye Wash Facilities and Standpipes – Mt. Oliphant

To supply supervision, labour, small tools and incidentals required to complete installation of emergency eyewash stations and safety showers and associated standpipes.

Tower Foundation St. Jago, Clarendon – Mt. Oliphant, Manchester

This project was executed in association with Jatlin Construction & Associates Ltd. and essentially involved the excavation of the tower bases (done by Surdeen Equipment & Trucking Co. Ltd). and the fabrication and installation of reinforcing steel works (done by Jatlin Construction & Associates Ltd.).
We did the reduce level excavation of 11 no. isolated tower bases to depths of approximately 25 ft. primarily in hard rock. The disposal of the material and preparation of the excavated surfaces for installation of the steel work. Total volume of excavation was in excess of 3, 000 m³ to facilitate construction of reinforced concrete base for tower.
Jatlin Construction & Associates Ltd. was responsible for the other works; the reinforcing steel was fabricated off-site and installed in the foundation to facilitate concrete casting by others. Quantity of reinforcement for each tower base was approximately 20 tons.

Sunbeam Boys Home Extension to Kitchen & Dining Facility

576 sq. ft. extension to the existing Kitchen and dining facilities. Construction is of reinforced concrete foundation, 6” thick concrete block wall, aluminium roof, concrete floor slab and aluminium windows.

Nashville Housing Development, Highgate, St. Mary Infrastructure Works

Excavating roadway and fill with river shingle and marl approximately 450mm thick and ready to receive curb wall and asphaltic concrete surface.
Installation of approximately 730m of water main complete with valves, fire hydrants and all other appendages.
Installation of Armco super-span low profile arch bridge of span 6.28m and rise of 2.43cm complete with guard rail.

American Airlines Crash Site – Demolition & Clean-up works

Using the construction of the berm and cart away the remediated soil to the Municipal Dump.

Hotel Four Seasons, Ruthven Road, Kingston 5

Demolition of building and cart away debris to facilitate construction of new hotel rooms.

Maggotty Hydro Expansion Project Construction of New Buried Pipeline including all earthworks

Construction of new buried pipeline including all earthworks but excluding FRC works. Chainage 2+147 to 2+310.

Trench excavation, Boscobel Aerodrome, St. Mary

Excavation of trench 2 ft. wide by various depths to facilitate the installation of electrical conduits along the runway of the Boscobel Aerodrome. Total length of excavation 8, 587 ft.

Trench excavation – Creighton Hall, St. Thomas

Excavation of trench 2 ft. wide X 4 ft. deep to facilitate the installation of 4” diameter water pipe within the Perth Housing Development project – Mandeville, Manchester.
Total volume of excavation to date is 1, 582 cubic yards.

Trench excavation for Samuel Reid, Ocho Rios, St. Ann

Excavation of trench 2 ft. wide X 4 ft. deep to facilitate the installation of 6” diameter water pipe from the Sandals Golf Course at Upton, St. Ann to the Sandals Grant Sport Hotel in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.
Total volume of excavation was 4, 175 cubic yards.

Waterloo Road Bridge - Demolition and General Earthworks

The works was carried out in four distinctive phases and in each phase one quarter of the existing bridge was demolished and the excavation works done to accommodate one quarter of the new abutment.
The contract was varied to accommodate Surdeen Equipment & Trucking Co. Ltd. undertaking the construction of the approach road on either side of the bridge and extending from the abutment from the south side to Annette Crescent and on the north side from the abutment to Upper Waterloo Road and Church Road. This phase of the work involved the laying of 900mm diameter HDPE drainage pipe, and some 2, 316m³ of granular fill in base course, sub-base and capping layer of various depths and compacted and finish to receive asphaltic concrete.

Sewer & Rising Main Top Loading Station – Mt. Oliphant

Excavation of trench 2’-0” wide × 4’-0” deep by a Trencor 1060 trenching machine to facilitate the installation of an 8” diameter HDPE sewer pipe and a 6” diameter HDPE drain pipe.
The sewer and drain pipes were fused using a Fusion Machine provided by the client.
After pipes were installed they were encased in sand and concrete with the remainder of the trench backfilled with selected excavated material. A total of ten (10) manholes were constructed from 8” thick concrete base slab, 8” thick cover slab and heavy duty cast iron manhole cover.
The total length of the pipeline was 405 metres.

The HDPE & PVC pipes and all associated fittings and valves were supplied by the Main Contractor.

19 Hillcrest Avenue, Kingston 6

Demolition of the existing structure previously used as a restaurant and office and reduce level excavation to facilitate construction of basement garage on new three (3) storey structure to be used as a bank.
Total volume of excavation was 4, 233 cubic yards and the material was transported to the Municipal Dump.

Trident Hotel, Port Antonio

Excavation of Trench and manholes 2, 194.86 cubic yards.

Raw Water Supply System
Port Antonio Water, Sewerage and Drainage Project

Half-Way-Tree Transportation Centre
Half-Way-Tree Transportation Centre – Reduce level excavation

Reduce level excavation of project site to facilitate construction on the lower level of the Half – Way – Tree transportation centre. Excavation works was executed during the night and clean-up operation (sweeping and washing down) was done before the start of the next work day so as not to disturb the businesses within the environ of the Transportation Centre.

The total length of the pipeline was 6, 000 metres running from St. Jago in Clarendon to Mt. Oliphant in Manchester.

The HDPE & PVC pipes and all associated fittings and valves were supplied by the Main Contractor.

Dune Restoration and Landfarm works
American Airlines Landfarm (Soil Remediation) and Dune Restoration and Landfarm works

Removal of contaminated soil at the American Airlines accident site at the Palisadoes Road and the storage and remediation of the soil at a landfarm constructed on the Jamaica Maritime Institute property.
The landfarm consisted of two (2) cells constructed of 3, 237m³ of compacted marl in berms 2m high. Inside of the berms were lined initially with 1, 338m³ of clay in two 150mm lift which were compacted to 95% proctor density. Thereafter a 300mm layer of river shingle was spread on the clay liner. A recirculated tank approximately 10m x 10m x 1.2m high of 8” thick block wall and 6” thick reinforce concrete base was constructed within the berm into which a submersible pump was installed and connected to the sprinkler system which was installed after the contaminated soil was spread within the berm. Some 50, 000 gallons of seawater was added by a pipeline constructed from the sea and which was used to filled the tank. The water was circulated through the sprinkler system through the submersible pump.
The contaminated soil remained within the berm approximately one (1) year and after having satisfied the clients’ conditions the entire facility was excavated and the material taken to the Municipal Dump under a separate contract.

Jamaica Energy Partners Revetment Works
Jamaica Energy Partners Revetment Works, Old Harbour Bridge

Construct revetment work, repair revetment work in the vicinity of the Jamaica Energy Park Barge, Doctor Bird and Doctor Bird II in Old Harbour Bay. 5, 000 cubic yards of boulders, ½ ton to 2 tons was transported to Quarry and used to extend the revetment work and to repair the existing revetment which was damaged by Hurricane Ivan.

Rehabilitation work
Ballards Valley Primary School Rehabilitation, St. Elizabeth

Our organization was invited by Nakash Construction & Equipment Co. Ltd. to help in the construction of the Ballards Valley Primary School, a project in which they were the main contractor.
We provided mainly Project Management Services.
The works entailed the construction of a two (2) storey, six (6) classroom block. The building was constructed of reinforced concrete frame with concrete floor and roof slab with block wall and aluminium windows infill between the columns.

Hydro Expansion Project

All works associated with the cleaning, bushing, re-profiling and grading of the Tailrace Channel in accordance with the Scope of works.

Building Construction work
Construction of Steer Town High School, St. Ann

Our organization was invited by Jatlin Construction & Associates Ltd. to help in the financing and the completion of the construction of Steer Town High School, a project in which they were the main contractor, and the distinct possibility the contract would have been terminated.
The scope of the original contract is as detailed below:
The construction of a High School comprising of five (5) Classroom Blocks, Visitors’ Lodge, Gate House, Playfield, Multi-Purpose Court, Central Seating, Roadway and Parking, Footpaths, Sewage and Stormwater Disposal, Incoming Water Mains, Boundary Fencing and Gate.
The buildings are constructed of reinforced concrete foundation, frame, staircases, roof and floor slabs. Walls are mainly of hollow concrete blockwalling with small areas of breather blocks and steel grillework.
Finishes include mainly steel floated concrete floors with small areas of ceramic tiling, rendered and painted ceiling, waterproofing membrane to roof, timber and laminated fitting and fixtures.
The works also include timber doors, aluminium louvre windows, plumbing and fire protection.The minor buildings are of similar construction except they are of timber framed roof covered with metal sheeting.
The works performed involved all of the works described above and including the reduced level excavation to construct the new playfield and biodigester system.

Construction of Roads
Widcombe Heights Development Demolition and Earthworks - Phase II Construction of Roads & Services for New Residential

Subdivision

Surdeen Equipment & Trucking Co. Ltd. have been employed to construct roads, drainage and site infrastructure on a prestigious housing development in Widcombe Heights, St Andrew.

The work consists of 550m of roads and sidewalks, 600m of drainage, 400m of open concrete channels together with water, electricity and telecoms utilities installation.

Widcombe Heights Development Demolition and Earthworks – Phase II

Demolish 9 No. existing single-storey structures of varying floor area, generally with timber framed walls and timber framed flat or pitched roofs; grub up concrete ground floor beds.
Earthworks: Clear site of all vegetation exceeding 12” in height, including trees not exceeding 24” girth. Excavate over site 6” deep to remove vegetation soil to reduce levels.
Allow for keeping all excavations free from storm, percolating or standing water. Wheel, deposit, spread and level in 9” thick layers, where directed on site, surplus excavated material.
Separate from excavated material all organic matter including tree roots, load, and cart away to tip.

Trench excavation – Greater Spanish Town Water Supply project

Excavation of trench 2 ft. wide X 4 ft. deep to facilitate the installation of 6” diameter water pipe from Green Acres to Top Mountain, St. Catherine.
Total volume of excavation was 6, 434 cubic yards.

Maggotty Hydro Expansion Project Demolition of existing pipeline Chainage 0+187 to 0+730

To provide labour, plant, tools, equipment and temporary materials and stockpile of the existing woodstave pipe between Chainage 0+187 to 730.

Widcombe Heights Development Demolition and Site Clearance – Phase 1

Cut down trees exceeding 24” and not exceeding 60” girth.
Cut down trees exceeding 60” and not exceeding 120” girth.
Remove from site and load and cart away to tip all loose non-organic material and debris on the site including debris arising from the demolition works; also trees cut down, together with their limbs to municipal dump.

American Airlines Crash Site – Redevelopment of Work Area

To supply, spread and level 4” thick layer of topsoil and prepare to receive grass seeds. To set up sprinkler system for watering seeds.

HDPE Effluent discharge line – Mt. Oliphant

To fusion weld and install 3” diameter HDPE pipe at existing ground level and cover with 15’-0” long x average 1’-6” wide and 1’-6” high compacted marl berms at 15’-0” interval intervals.
Excavate 18’ wide x 3’-0” deep trench for 3” diameter HDPE pipe, part return fill and ram and cart away surplus excavated material.
Install 3” diameter HDPE flange and backing ring and connect to outlet at sewage treatment plant and inlet at raw water reservoir.
Total length of pipeline 1, 167 metres.

Trench excavation – Perth Housing Development, Mandeville

Excavation of trench 2 ft. wide X 4 ft. deep to facilitate the installation of 4” diameter water pipe within the Perth Housing Development project – Mandeville, Manchester.
Total volume of excavation was 3, 694 cubic yards.
